The Teaching Performance Record (TPR) is a low inference teacher observation and professional development system based jointly on the NYC Professional Teaching Standards and a teacher
observation system developed by faculty and students at the University of Virginia. Unlike many observation tools, this instrument offers data collectors a valid, reliable, useful method to collect information on teaching practices that is lower-inference in nature. Not surprisingly, then, it provides coaches and mentors with quantifiable data describing the extent to which teachers behave in ways that influence student academic learning, involvement in classes, and motivation. A paradigm for using the TPR as a means of facilitating professional growth is shown in the diagram below.

Available in laptop or PDA-based versions, the TPR records data digitally, making storage and analysis simple and instantaneous.

Using the NYC Professional Teaching Standards or the TPR's Strategic Teaching constructs, teachers, administrators, and aspiring leaders can examine data for the purpose of providing feedback and informing professional development options to teachers.
