Like principals and administrators, teachers must take on greater
roles today in order to successfully reach their students. They
must provide increased classroom opportunities for success, after
school programs that are relevant to the curriculum and the real
world, and the possibility of hope for the future.
Module
Objective: Through the examination of the case EBC Bushwick
High School for Public Service, Stephen Peters' materials, and the
virtual library readings, this module will help you to explore the
realities of teaching and how best to meet those realities, which
include but not limited to: addressing students in at-risk environments,
low performance among pupils, funding issues, and problems with
home-school communication.

Discussion: What are some of the instructional and school-wide issues with
which EBC High School is faced? How are these issues similar and/or
different from those in your school and how are they currently confronted?
What actions have teachers at EBC High School taken to resolve
some of these issues and what are the consequences, both
short and long-term, of the actions they have taken?
Journal: Review Peters' examination of "How the Roles
of Teachers Have Changed" either in your text (Figure 3.1,
p34) or from his presentation, and the knowledge from the
readings, especially Gordon's and Maxey's "Six Environmental Difficulties."
Compare how the new realities of teaching and environmental difficulties
are addressed in your school. What lessons can you learn about how
your school might better face these "new realities, issues,
and environmental factors?"
Workbook: Using Peters' "System Deliverables to Students" (Figure
3.2, p39), describe how the administrators, staff, and teachers
of EBC Bushwick have created successful "opportunities for
effective teaching and learning." In an action plan,
describe how your school might provide similar opportunities for
students in each of the fifteen categories, describing the anticipated
and unanticipated consequences for each.
