A
fundamental part of the CaseNEX approach is our unique 5-step
method, a matrix for approaching complex situations, understanding
cause and effect relationships, and exploring multiple solutions
to challenging problems. GEAR UP facilitators are trained
to use the five-step method to help students gain the insight
and analytical skills to effectively address their own challenges.
The Five-Step Method includes the following:
 |
Issues: Identify facts, issues,
problems, and challenges present in the case. Discuss
the obvious as well as the underlying or hidden issues. |
 |
Perspectives: Imagine how each
character would see the issues, problems, and challenges
presented in each case. |
 |
Knowledge: Review what you know
about the situation in the case. Click on the resources
section to learn more about the challenges facing the
characters in these cases. |
 |
Actions: Based on what you know,
describe actions the characters in the case could take
to help improve the situation. |
 |
Consequences: Predict what might
happen if these actions were taken. Think about what
will happen immediately as well as what will happen
later (6 months, 1 year, 10 years later). Also, think
about intended and unintended consequences (things you
mean to happen, and things that could happen that might
surprise you later). |
Using the five-step method as a way of evaluating the cases
helps students to apply the same level of thinking to their
own lives, and it's a great tool to aid GEAR UP facilitators
in meeting program goals.
