CaseNEX proudly offers an innovative course entitled H.E.L.P. (Hip Hop as an Educational Literacy Program): Ensuring Educational Excellence through Equity and Effective School Practices. Course participants will use CaseNEX case studies and online collaboration to explore new methods of culturally responsive teaching, implement differentiated instruction, and reflect upon the use of H.E.L.P. instructional materials as a way to motivate learners and improve their literacy skills. H.E.L.P., a supplemental reading program, addresses the needs of deficient readers particularly between the ages of 13 -18. All research-based lessons align to standards set forth by the National Council of Teachers of English and the International Reading Association. The program includes innovative activities that blend the five core literacy program elements identified by the National Reading Panel in 2000: phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Through CaseNEX courses, educators are exposed to the latest research regarding content knowledge and instructional strategies. The convenience of an online course means that time spent commuting to class and money spent on gas are reduced. Participants collaborate with peers and receive instructor feedback from the comfort of their home. All materials and assignments are accessed and completed online. Courses are 8 weeks in length, and easy to integrate into a busy schedule. CaseNEX courses include multimedia cases with video of actual classrooms, students, teachers and administrators. Cases also include critical perspectives of leading education faculty from across the country, as well as student work samples and teacher lesson plans. The cases are "slices of life" that bring learning alive and form a realistic connection between professional development and the complex school environment. Case method learning encourages participants to reflect on what works, to collaborate on the design of solutions to instructional challenges, and to put theory into practice. (Hip Hop as an Educational Literacy Program): Ensuring Educational Excellence through Equity and Effective School Practices Our cultures, learning styles, and varied experiences affect the ways we teach and learn. Connecting with students and valuing what each individual brings to the classroom are keys to ensuring that all students achieve at high levels. In this course, participants will gain an understanding of the ways context influences both instruction and learning in the classroom. Through the use of case studies, a 5-step problem-solving method, collaboration, and reflective practice, course participants will explore new methods of culturally responsive teaching and differentiated instruction geared toward students of all learning styles and multiple intelligences. New knowledge, skills and attitudes will enable participants to better serve their increasingly diverse students.
