A 10-clock-hour (1 PLU) Professional Learning Course
Required by SBOE Rule 160-4-2-.38 to Count Service to Gifted Students in AP/IB Courses

CaseNEX and Heart of Georgia RESA are partnering to offer a 10-clock-hour professional development course on the nature and needs of gifted learners at the secondary level for the Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate teachers. This two week, online course meets Georgia's requirements for a 10-clock-hour professional learning course. In addition to the two week interactive course, teachers will have an additional two weeks to complete their final assignment. Heart of Georgia RESA will provide 1 PLU to all teachers successfully completely this course.

Through CaseNEX courses, educators are exposed to the latest research regarding content knowledge and instructional strategies. The convenience of an online course means that time spent commuting to class and money spent on gas are reduced. Participants collaborate with peers and receive instructor feedback from the comfort of their home. All materials and assignments are accessed and completed online.

The course includes a multimedia case with video of actual classrooms, students, teachers and administrators. The case provides a "slice of life" that bring learning alive and form a realistic connection between professional development and the complex school environment. Case method learning encourages participants to reflect on what works, to collaborate on the design of solutions to instructional challenges, and to put theory into practice. Course information, including course title, description, and cost, are provided below.

Serving Gifted and Able Students in Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate Courses

Frequently, gifted and able students are served by placement in Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) courses. While these courses provide an accelerated or enriched curriculum, they are not specifically designed to meet the socio-emotional and intellectual needs of gifted students. This course fulfills the 10- hour professional development requirement for Georgia AP/IB teachers (please refer to SBOB Rule 160-4-2-.38 , p. 4) and provides AP and IB teachers with background information on gifted students and special populations of gifted students. This online, case-based course presents practical, research- based strategies for differentiating the AP and IB curriculum to help teachers better serve these students.
