The First Online Reading Courses to Meet the Maryland SBBR Requirements

Through a partnership with North Georgia College and State University, CaseNEX offers the first online reading courses that meet the Maryland State Department of Education's (MSDE) Scientifically Based Reading Research (SBRR) requirements. These MSDE approved courses address the following four Maryland competencies:

  • Process and Acquisition of Reading;
  • Instruction of Reading,
  • Materials for Reading, and
  • Assessments for Reading Instruction.

Regular and special education teachers at the early childhood and elementary levels may use the courses to complete the required 12 semester hours in specific reading coursework for certification and recertification. In addition, Maryland teachers with provisional certificates, future teachers taking courses for “credit count”, teachers seeking reading endorsements, and teachers in a Resident Teacher programs may use these courses within their programs. Verification of this MSDE approval can be found in the Maryland State Approved Reading Courses Report.

Benefits of Online Courses

Through CaseNEX courses, educators are exposed to the latest research regarding content knowledge and instructional strategies. The convenience of an online course means that time spent commuting to class and money spent on gas are reduced. Participants collaborate with peers and receive instructor feedback from the comfort of their home. All materials and assignments are accessed and completed online. Courses are 8-12 weeks in length, and easy to integrate into a busy lifestyle.

The courses include multimedia cases with video of actual classrooms, students, teachers and administrators, as well as student work samples and teacher lesson plans. Case method learning encourages participants to reflect on what works, to collaborate on the design of solutions to instructional challenges, and to put theory into practice.
