Professional Development Courses

CaseNEX is pleased to offer free, online professional development courses to New York City principals and teachers. Courses include three sessions or 15 contact hours of work. Teachers can choose to complete the first course session during their professional development time.

Through CaseNEX courses, educators are exposed to the latest research regarding content knowledge and instructional strategies. All materials and assignments are accessed and completed online. You may complete the work for these self-paced courses at any time of the day or night.

The courses include multimedia cases with video of actual classrooms, students, teachers and administrators. Cases provide a "slice of life" that bring learning alive and form a realistic connection between professional development and the complex school environment. Case method learning encourages participants to reflect on what works, to collaborate on the design of solutions to instructional challenges, and to put theory into practice.

Designing and Assessing Technology-Enhanced Lessons
Technology has the power to revolutionize how we teach and broaden what our students learn.  This course explores how technology supports learning and enables teachers to develop, teach, and assess effective technology-enhanced lessons Introduction to Phonics

IDEA: From Identification to IEP
This course addresses legal trends and issues related to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and its 2004 Reauthorization.  Course participants focus on the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) process, from writing the IEP to ensuring full and effective participation of all involved parties.

Introduction to Phonics Instruction
The role of systematic and explicit phonics instruction in a reading program for primary grade students has been recognized by teachers, parents, and federal policy makers. This course provides an overview of systematic phonics instruction and assessment in the primary classroom.

Narrowing the Achievement Gap by Addressing Diversity 
Connecting with students and valuing their broad and varied experiences are keys to addressing the achievement gap. In this course, participants will explore issues around culture and teaching, review tools that will help them transform the curriculum, and modify instructional strategies to meet the needs of diverse communities of learners.

Using Alternative Assessments
This course focuses on developing and using alternative assessment strategies that allow all students to show what they know so teachers may better target instruction. Course participants will review and evaluate various assessment approaches and develop strategies connected to their own curriculum and students’ needs, including English language learners and others for whom traditional assessments may not provide an accurate measure of their knowledge and abilities.
