Continuing Education: Gerontological Nursing Essentials

Given the increasing number of older adults in our society, professional nurses who work primarily with older adults require current knowledge about the biological, health, psychological, economic, administrative, service delivery, and social policy aspects of aging. Additionally, they will recognize the theories and principles that guide the understanding of gerontology. Through multi-media case studies, RNs will deepen their understanding of issues affecting the aging population.

The Gerontological Nursing Essentials, Continuing Education Course, addresses the educational needs of nurses who are, or will be engaged in planning, administration, and provision of health care services for older adults. RNs from all educational preparations who are currently working with the elderly, or who desire to work with the elderly are invited to participate in this course, enhancing both their own career advancement potential and the workforce development needs of our society.

The Gerontological Nursing Essentials, Continuing Education Course, comprises six sessions. Each session requires students to complete readings, view video case scenarios, and submit a journal assignment. An evaluation of each session and an overall course evaluation is also expected. The University of Akron College of Nursing will award 24 CEs to participants who complete all program requirements.
