Echols County Registration Registration is CLOSED. CaseNEX is pleased to partner with Echols County to offer professional development courses. Through CaseNEX online professional development, participants will build their capacity for serving English language learners through a case study approach. The Endorsement Series consists of three courses: Cultural Issues, Applied Linguistics, and Methods and Materials. Participants will register for each course separately. Preference will be given to already-enrolled students. Teachers will receive PLU credits after successful course completion. The online courses will allow teachers to collaborate with peers and receive instructor feedback from the comfort of their home. Courses provide a collaborative approach to learning and are based upon the tenets of problem-based learning. All materials and assignments are completed online allowing teachers the flexibility to work from anywhere. Course List Cultural Issues for ESOL Teachers—Endorsement Course The focus of this course is the role of culture in the teaching and learning of linguistically diverse students. In this course prospective ESOL teachers will examine major concepts, principles, theories, and research on culturally responsive learning environments and strategies for English language learners. This 11-week, 50-contact hour course is one of three courses required for the Georgia add-on ESOL Endorsement. Participants in this course must commit to the complete the three course endorsement series during 2007-2008. Participants will receive 5 PLU credits upon the successful completion of this course. Applied Linguistics Through this course, participants will become knowledgeable about the nature and structure of language and how first and second languages develop. Participants will explore language teaching strategies consistent with current understanding of the nature, structure, and development of language. By developing a repertoire of effective strategies, participants will become more proficient at supporting students' second language development. Teachers will investigate best practices and current research and consider how to adapt and integrate these principles into their own educational practice. Participants will receive 5 PLU credits upon the successful completion of this course. Methods and Materials for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) This course emphasizes the knowledge, understanding, and use of standards-based practices, assessments, and strategies related to planning, implementing, and managing ESL and content instruction, including classroom organization, teaching strategies for developing and integrating language skills, and choosing and adapting classroom and multimedia resources.
