Testing and Evaluation of ESOL (60 inservice points)
The purpose of this course is to enable teachers who are pursuing ESOL endorsement to implement culturally responsive assessment practices suitable for use with students who are classified as Limited English Proficient (LEP). Participants will address challenges of NCLB and high-stakes testing on ELLs and develop strategies for creating authentic assessments to evaluate students and improve their content-area instruction.
Cross-Cultural Communication and Understanding (60 inservice points)
This course examines the role of culture in the teaching and learning of linguistically diverse students. Prospective ESOL teachers will examine major concepts, principles, theories, and research on culturally responsive learning environments and choosing appropriate resources and strategies for English language learners. This course is the second of five courses in the Florida ESOL Endorsement.
Methods of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) (60 inservice points)
This course provides educators with the knowledge and skills to evaluate, develop and implement appropriate curricula that supports the language development of English Language Learners (ELLs). It includes a general overview of curriculum design, the basics of second language curricular needs and how to adapt instructional strategies for grade level content curriculum for ELLs. Different types of research-based instructional delivery models will be explored and teachers will gain proficiency in differentiating instruction based on language acquisition phase to ensure linguistic and academic success.
ESOL Curriculum and Materials Development (60 inservice points)
Connecting with students and valuing their broad and varied experiences
are keys to addressing the achievement gap. In this course, participants
will explore issues around culture and teaching, review tools that
will help them transform the curriculum, and modify instructional
strategies to meet the needs of diverse communities of learners.
Applied Linguistics (60 inservice points)
Through this course, participants will become knowledgeable about the nature and structure of language and how first and second languages develop. Participants will explore language teaching strategies consistent with the current understanding of the nature, structure and development of language. By developing a repertoire of effective strategies, participants will become more proficient at supporting students' second language and literacy development and content achievement. Teachers will investigate best practices and current research and consider how to adapt and integrate these principles into their own educational practice.
